Since 2014 a few brave souls have toiled in the bowels of HESAA HELL trying to echo the chorus of howling voices suffering in silence. While there has not been enough on the ground or legal action to back up our collective tales of woe that may soon be coming to an end – at least on the legal front. It all starts with our continued commitment to getting the word out about this important issue in NJ state politics and in the national political landscape.
You, dear reader, should contact Mr. Larry Sarlo if you want to take part in the first ever class action lawsuit against HESAA. As he related it to me, this particular suit (there could be more to follow) rests on the idea that HESAA provided you what’s called “false service” kind of like false advertising. According to Sarlo: “Anyone who has been served a lawsuit either through HESAA or any private student loan servicer should contact me via email,” which is LSARLO@comcast.net.
He also said that the lawsuit is still in it’s beginning stages and the lawyers he is working with are still setting up parameters for who will qualify for the suit. When you email him, prode some details about the suit you have been served with from HESAA and be sure to include your contact information. Other details to provide the lawyer are the circumstances under which you took the loan and the information you were provided about the loan, if any. Sarlo said if a borrower feels “their loan was provded in a way that it was never affordable in the first place or they thought they were dealing with state government rather than a private student loan” service, they should get in touch with him. I suspect there are many, many of you out there so send that email now to LSARLO@comcast.net.
This is a start to a long battle that we must take on ourselves because clearly the politicians like Sweeney and Christie are not on our side. The more people who think they qualify and get in touch with him the better. The significance of this, provided there are enough people in the suit, is that HESAA may at some time in the future be made publicly accountable for their horrible practices that stifle the productivity, suck the life energy and deplete the bank accounts of a generation. Like all movements, ours is starting slow but with time it will pick up the necessary steam to change these predatory student loan practices once and for all.
Never give up the fight and email this guy at your earliest convenience!

Mark, have you considered producing any bumper stickers or other products to spread the word about HESAA HELL ? I feel like we are responsible for warning as many people as possible NOT to borrow from them.

I am in the process of filing a suit against one of their collection attorneys took out a loan in 2005 paid on time ran into some issues my other loans were in deferrment but not this one for some reason and it defaulted in 2011. Have paid on time with collection agency for over 5 years and they only recently started sending statements. Low and behold they interest rate changed and payments werent credited correct. Calls to HESAA to provide documentation fall on deaf ears. If there was a service that would allow you to punch someone through a phone I would sign up today!

A meeting was held at Tomes and Hanratty, Freehold, NJ, to talk about taking action to resolve many of the issues addressed on this site.

I have just stumbled upon this website and am stuck in this hell! I thought this was a state loan when i borrowed back in 2010 and had no idea it was backed by Wall Street bonds!
I can't believe they pay people to give them good, fake reviews! My favorite yelp review states she has no loans with HESAA however, she gives them 4 stars. LOL UGH!!! I wish I could bring hell upon these vultures. How can they not forgive loans for government or service workers!?
her lovely review below!!
I do not have any loans with Hesaa but I think TAG is great. I originally did not qualify for it due to dependency but now that I am older and qualify it is definitely a great help to my school. It allows me to have less loans and enough funding for the commute. The application process wasn't even that impossible to do.

I was wondering if anyone else was having issues with them and their outrageous interest rates combined with lack of online services. 40 minute wait for a phone call? no online claim forms for deferment? Unbelieveable

Wait – HESSA isn't a state-run service? They defaulted my loans and now I'm paying a debt collector – but when I called post-graduation they told me I didn't have an account, as they already sold it!

We have been living in HESSA HELL since 2011. We were directed to this loan by false advertisement as the school told us it was the only other state "NJ Loan" we could get for our daughter to go to school in Pennsylvania. We were successful workers & cosigned as she could not get the loan on her own, as she had been a full time student. We defaulted when one of us became disabled and we could not afford the monthly payment. NJCLASS would not answer their phone so we were not able to speak to them about working with us to make reasonable payments based on our income. (they don't do that anyway, even though their literature states they can). Ever so swiftly we were contacted by their lawyers and ushered into court, where we swiftly lost, ( as the mediator had ears only for NJCLASS). 3 years later, making monthly payments (which our attorney was able to get NJCLASS to temporarily accept), we are now being brought back into court to collect the balloon payment. I expect we will loose everything, our daughter will never be able to have any of the joys of life and we will be at the mercy of the GREAT STATE of NEW JERSEY in our elder years. IF GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE would look at the big picture of helping NJCLASS victims resolve their loan problems, then this generation and their parents generation could work at paying off their school loan debt in a reasonable manor and be productive tax payers insuring their children's futures would be better.

I've been in HESAA Hell for 8 years…in perpetuity unless we join hands and bring them to task! Interest, penalty and "admin fees" every increasing and it's impacting my credit score. Worse, they continually retain my tax refund! Ugh….WE NEED TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE!

HESSA was a flawed program from it's inception designed to enrich Wall Street on the backs of NJ Families. Offering no solutions or remedies while our state lawmakers ignore the problem because too much money is at stake…. Keep whistling past the graveyard HESAA, as you try to collect even from the family of the DEAD!….Sow the wind………..
